ABOUT THE PROJECT
Kularts newest dance theater production, choreographed by master Philippine dance choreographer Jay Loyola and original music score by renowned musician and composer Florante Aguilar, Ba-e Makiling is a 1 hour, 15-minute dance theater production inspired by Philippine myths and native spirituality. The new dance work will explore the story of the deity Ba-e Makiling, guardian of the dormant volcano of Mt. Makiling and her love affair with a human, Lakai – a metaphor for re-discovering and reclaiming the indigenous self that has been forcefully denied by centuries of colonization. Set before colonization in a rural Philippine village at the foot of Mt. Makiling, the story will be told through innovative dance movement rooted in the traditional Philippine dances of the Luzon region.
The feature-length work premiered at Bindlestiff Studio in the SoMa, Sept 9-11 & 16-18, 2016.
